Spring in North County San Diego is kind of magic.

and it’s one of the best times of year for spring family portraits. Whether you’re in Vista, Carlsbad, Oceanside, or Encinitas, now is the perfect season to book your session.

Why Spring Family Portraits in North County Are So Special

The light is soft, the hills are green (for now), and wildflowers peek out just about everywhere. It’s that small, fleeting window before everything gets sun-bleached and busy again—and honestly, it’s my favorite time to photograph families.

Whether you’re in Vista, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, or anywhere in North County, this season is one of the most beautiful and peaceful times to plan a session.

The weather is warm but not too hot. Kids can run around barefoot. We’re not chasing sunsets at 8 PM yet. It’s just… easy. And that shows in the photos.

Best Locations for Spring Family Portraits in North County:

I’m always scouting little pockets of beauty around us, but a few of my favorite spots this time of year include:

  • The open trails in Carlsbad and San Elijo Lagoon

  • Coastal bluffs in Encinitas with just the right hint of ocean breeze

  • Green, tucked-away fields in Vista that look like something out of a storybook

  • And the beach, of course—always a classic for Oceanside family portraits

If you’ve been thinking about booking spring family portraits in North County, now is truly the most beautiful time to do it. Everything is still green, the days are mild, and the light is soft—perfect for a relaxed family photo session. For location scouting or bloom forecasts, I always keep an eye on the San Diego Botanic Garden site. It’s one of the best places to see what’s blooming locally.

But lately, I’ve also been loving something even simpler: portraits in the studio.
No bugs. No wind. No reschedules due to foggy mornings or fussy toddlers. Just beautiful light, cozy connection, and space to be present.

Studio Sessions in Vista

If you haven’t seen the studio yet—especially the black-and-white portraits I’ve been creating there—I’d love to show you. They’re clean, timeless, and honestly some of my favorite work ever. Studio sessions are especially great for:

  • Families with babies or younger kids who nap early

  • Anyone who wants a relaxed, no-stress session with room to breathe

  • Clients who love clean walls, soft textures, and artful simplicity

Studio family sessions are available year-round, and I’ll be offering a handful of Motherhood Minis on May 10, the day before Mother’s Day. If that sounds like your kind of moment, feel free to reach out.

What to Wear for Spring Portraits

Whether we’re in the studio or outdoors, a little prep goes a long way. My quick advice:

  • Keep colors soft and natural: creams, dusty blues, blush, taupe, soft greens

  • Avoid logos, busy prints, or anything that distracts from faces and connection

  • Layers add texture and movement—think cardigans, gauze dresses, or a light shawl

  • Comfort is key: if you feel good, it will show
